The core microbiome within oral microbial communities plays a fundamental role in maintaining oral health. Recent studies have demonstrated that these core taxa exhibit remarkable stability in healthy individuals, with their composition being largely resistant to external factors such as season and gender. Early colonization by core microbiota not only contributes to the establishment of a healthy oral environment but also exerts synergistic functional effects that are crucial for effectively defending against the onset of oral diseases. However, the emergence of ecological dysbiosis disrupts this equilibrium, thereby leading to oral health problems. This review aims to explore the composition and functional roles of the core oral microbiome, assess the impact of dysbiosis on oral health, and summarize current research progress and future directions, with the goal of providing new perspectives for oral microbiome research.
