Analysis of the Distribution Characteristics of Falls and Risk Factors for Fall-Related Injuries among 110 Elderly Inpatients

A retrospective analysis on the distribution features of falls and risk factors for fall injuries was conducted in 110 elderly inpatients to provide a basis for preventing fall injuries among the elderly. A total of 110 fall-related adverse events reported in the adverse event system of Binzhou People’s Hospital from January 2021 to December 2023, involving patients aged≥60 years, were selected to analyze the distribution characteristics of the fall population and influencing factors of fall injuries. Among the 110 patients who experienced a fall, 53.63% sustained injuries as a result of the fall. The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that the probability of sustaining an injury from a fall between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM was 5.077 times higher than that between 8:00 AM and 5:59 PM (95% CI=1.161—22.205, P=0.031), the probability of injury from a fall during the 23:00—7:59 time period was 2.408 times that of the 8:00—17:59 time period (95% CI=1.03—5.632, P=0.043),and the probability of sustaining an injury from a fall among those with a history of falls in the past three months was 5.455 times higher than among those without such a history (95% CI =1.479—20.122, P=0.011). The severity of injuries sustained by elderly inpatients following a fall is associated with the time of day the fall occurred and their history of falls over the past three months. It is recommended that high-risk periods be designated as priority monitoring periods, and that dynamic assessments and personalized interventions for patients with a recent history of falls be strengthened to reduce the risk of fall-related injuries.
