ABSTRACT

Cartilage is an essential component of human body tissues. However, due to the insufficient oxygen and nutrition supply, cartilage is generated slowly by human body. In order to repair cartilage fractures, researchers are now looking for ways to stimulate cartilage regeneration artificially. It is known that hypoxia inducible factor 1A, known as HIF-1A, upregulates the chondrocyte formation. Under normoxia, HIF-1A degrades while under hypoxia, HIF-1A molecules accumulates, and chondrocytes are formed. Currently, researchers are investigating cartilage regeneration by increasing the amount of HIF-1A inside human cells. In this paper, the basic understanding of cartilage is provided, and I evaluate the influence of mechanical factors and acidified environments to the presence and stabilization of HIF-1A.
