ABSTRACT
This paper records the setting and planning of an Asian literature theme unit provided for a multicultural 2nd grade ESL class. The central question is how to design a lesson unit that helps students with the English language academically while scaffoldingstudents with the recognition of diverse cultures. To address this issue, the paper describes the design of the balanced reading unit, including the book choice for different purposes. By analyzing the data collected from the daily teaching and observing journal taken in the classroom, the paper reflects the application process of the unit.
